Amazon Return Instructions Removal Creates New Headaches for FBM Sellers

Amazon return instructions will no longer be available in Return Settings, making it harder for FBM sellers to explain return requirements and protect against damaged or incomplete returns.

E-commerce sellers are already dealing with a return rate of roughly 20.8% in 2026, making every return another operational and financial consideration. For FBM businesses, Amazon’s decision to remove Amazon return instructions creates another change that could affect how customers send merchandise back.

The issue is not simply that a field is disappearing from Seller Central. Sellers who handle their own fulfillment now need to consider how they will communicate important return requirements when dealing with products that require specific packaging, handling, or condition standards.

Amazon Removes Seller-Entered Return Instructions in August 2026

The removal of seller-written guidance is only one part of the return workflow FBM sellers need to review. The settings that control return authorization, label responsibility, and return merchandise authorization can determine who handles the return and who absorbs its costs.

For sellers using Amazon prepaid labels, the return generally follows the Amazon return policy rather than seller-defined requirements, while exempt products can have different label options. The choice between unpaid and seller prepaid labels also matters because it determines whether the customer or seller initially carries the return shipping expense.

FBM sellers should also pay close attention to safety claims once returned inventory arrives because the timing can affect their ability to recover money. A seller generally has four days after receiving the returned product to submit a safety claim, and eligible claims may cover the return label cost plus up to 50% of the item’s price, depending on the circumstances and product category.

The Amazon return settings therefore require more attention from FBM sellers than simply checking whether a return was approved. Sellers working with an Amazon agency or return solution provider can also review their return workflows, identify eligible claims, and determine which options may help recover costs as Amazon changes its return process.

Amazon Return Instructions Change Leaves Customer Guidance Unclear

The August change has also raised questions about what customers will see after an FBM return is authorized. Sellers who previously used Amazon return instructions to explain condition requirements, original packaging, or return shipping responsibilities no longer have that dedicated space for those details.

The issue is particularly important for sellers who manually authorize returns and use Amazon-generated unpaid labels. Without seller-specific guidance, customers may receive the return label without the same instructions that previously explained how the product should be prepared before shipment.

The change could also create problems when returned merchandise arrives used, damaged, or incomplete. Sellers may have less opportunity to set expectations before the package is shipped, potentially increasing the time required to inspect returns and determine whether the merchandise can be resold.

Amazon has not provided much detail about what information will replace the removed field, leaving sellers to review how their Amazon return settings communicate return requirements under the broader Amazon return policy. For now, FBM sellers should monitor the customer-facing return experience and update any other approved seller communications they use to provide necessary return information.

Amazon Reduces Return Window for 16 Categories Starting September

According to Basic Tutorials, Amazon is also changing return windows in Germany, with 16 additional product categories moving from a 30-day voluntary return period to a 14-day statutory period starting September 1, 2026. The change applies to categories including furniture, beauty, pet supplies, food and beverages, luggage, musical instruments, tires, and mobile electronics.

The shorter window does not apply to every category, with clothing, shoes, watches, jewelry, and Amazon-branded devices such as Echo, Fire TV, and Kindle retaining the 30-day period. Sellers should also note that the transition period keeps the previous 30-day window for items delivered by October 1, 2026, while marketplace sellers can still choose to offer a longer return period.

For affected products, customers have 14 days from receipt to declare a cancellation and then another 14 days to send the product back. This change is separate from the August removal of Amazon return instructions, but both updates affect how sellers manage the return experience and set customer expectations.

Sellers operating in the affected German categories should review their Amazon return settings and check that their stated policies match the applicable Amazon return policy. The change also makes return timing more important for inventory planning, particularly for products with high processing costs, short shelf lives, or lower resale value.
