A structured approach to testing audiences, managing spend, and improving efficiency.

Our Amazon DSP strategy follows a solid, tried and tested process for reviewing and adjusting campaigns. Every week, we look at which audiences are driving results and move budget toward them.

33.10% ROAS

The challenge:
Pillow inserts are highly competitive in Sponsored Products, and rising cost per click (CPC) made traditional PPC increasingly expensive for reaching new shoppers.

DSP Campaigns and tactics:

  • Individual Performance+ campaigns were made for different product sizes
  • Used awareness campaigns to promote larger product sizes that have premium prices
  • Used static display ads alongside video retargeting to reach interested shoppers
  • Retargeted cart abandoners and repeat product viewers with Amazon Marketing Cloud (AMC)
  • Reduced ad spend when inventory was running low

Results:

  • $446,000 in sales from $13,000 in ad spend
  • 59.2% of sales, or $264,000, came from new-to-brand buyers, growing the customer base

Account growth:
Over eight months, total sales grew from $987,000 in August to $1.3M in April the following year, with sessions up 53% as the brand reached more shoppers.

The challenge:
Some shoppers do not know bedside shelving exists, so the brand needed to introduce the product to shoppers who weren’t actively searching for it.

DSP Campaigns and tactics:

  • Two products promoted: a clip-on light and wall organizer
  • Retargeted shoppers who viewed the products in the past 30 days, and made separate campaign for shoppers who added the products to their carts in the past 30 days
  • Targeted shoppers interested in lamps, shelves, and nightstands
  • Placed ads on related product pages, cross-sold the light to shelf buyers and the shelf to light buyers
  • Excluded anyone who bought in the past year from conversion campaigns

Results:

  • $109,000 in sales from a $5,000  spend; $97,000 or 89% of that from first-time buyers
  • 20.20x ROAS on a monthly budget below $1,000

Account growth:
Across five months, sales rose from $232,000 in April to over $2.9M in August, with sessions increasing 551% from 135,768 to 884,481.

What new-to-brand sales reveal beyond ROAS

ROAS tells you how efficiently a campaign generated sales. New-to-brand sales tell you whether it reached new customers, counting only shoppers who had not bought from the brand in the past year.

number 1.gif

Why the rate tends to be low
Most advertising re-sells to people who were going to buy anyway. Branded search terms, repeat buyers, and subscribers all inflate ROAS while adding no new customers.

number 2.gif

How we bring in more new customers
Every conversion audience excludes past-year purchasers, so campaigns reach only non-customers. One brand hit 89.5% new-to-brand on under $1,000 a month.

What a strong result looks like
Anything above 30% means DSP is acquiring rather than recycling. Our August portfolio averaged 39%, six of 13 brands cleared 60%, and replenishment runs lower.

Maintaining returns as DSP spend grows

Increasing ad spend only helps if campaigns continue to generate strong returns. We actively monitor three areas on every account and adjust spend when performance changes.

Clean up retargeting audiences

We regularly update retargeting audiences to remove shoppers who have already purchased, so ad spend stays focused on potential customers.

Limit ad frequency

We limit how often each shopper sees an ad so the budget can reach more people instead of repeatedly targeting the same shoppers.

Test and refresh ads

We A/B test different ads for effectiveness and refresh them regularly to keep campaign performance from declining.
