Amazon Product Image Translation Uses AI to Convert Image Text for Global Shoppers

Amazon product image translation automatically converts text in product images into customers’ preferred languages across 14 stores, helping sellers reduce localization work and reach more international shoppers.

For many Amazon sellers, product images do more than show what an item looks like because they also explain features, sizing, specifications, and other buying details. With 56% of online shoppers looking at product images before other listing content, those visuals can play an important role in whether an international shopper understands the offer.

The challenge has been keeping that information readable when a listing reaches customers who speak another language. Amazon product image translation gives sellers a new way to handle that problem with AI-generated translations, but brands should review the output carefully when image text includes technical, safety, or product-specific information.

Amazon Expands AI Translation to Product Images

Amazon has introduced a new feature that automatically translates text in product images for shoppers across 14 stores, including the US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Ireland, Sweden, and the UK. The feature is designed to make international selling easier by reducing the need for sellers to create separate image versions for different languages.

The new Amazon product image translation system can identify when image text does not match a shopper’s preferred language and generate a translated version. In the US, Canada, Germany, Spain, and Belgium, Amazon can also create versions based on individual language preferences, such as showing Spanish image text to a Spanish-speaking shopper in the US.

The translated versions appear on product detail pages and in Image Manager, while the original images remain unchanged, and sellers can upload their own versions if they prefer. This means Amazon translated product images can provide an additional localization option without preventing sellers from controlling the images they use for their listings.

The update also points to a broader use of AI across Amazon product images, as Amazon has already used AI to determine image alt text for A+ Content. For sellers working with an Amazon agency, the development makes Amazon image localization another area to monitor, particularly because the accuracy of AI-generated translations may vary and sellers can replace translated images with their own localized versions.

Amazon Adds AI Quality Checks and Seller Controls for Translated Images

Amazon says its image translation system uses AI with quality guardrails before translated versions are published to shoppers. The company also says the process preserves brand elements, product specifications, and visual quality while translating text within eligible images.

The update gives sellers more flexibility when managing Amazon listing localization because they do not have to replace their original creative to provide localized image text. Amazon says the translated versions are added while the original image in the store’s primary language remains unchanged.

Sellers that prefer to control their own translations can upload an image with the correct language, which automatically removes Amazon’s translated version from the product detail page. This gives brands a way to use their own localized creative when AI-translated images do not fit their requirements.

Amazon Product Image Translation Could Change How Sellers Localize Global Listings

Ecomcrew reports that text-heavy graphics such as size charts, feature callouts, comparison images, and product infographics have been a challenge for sellers expanding into other Amazon marketplaces because existing listing translation tools focus on text fields rather than words embedded inside image files. Amazon product image translation addresses that gap by making image-based product information available in the shopper’s language without requiring sellers to manually recreate every graphic for each market.

The change could matter most for listings where customers rely on images to understand sizing, product features, specifications, or comparisons before purchasing. If shoppers cannot understand those details, they may choose another listing, make the wrong purchase, or return an item because the information in the graphic was unclear, making Amazon listing localization more important for sellers with international catalogs.

Sellers should check their translated images in Image Manager and pay close attention to brand names, logos, trademarked terms, technical specifications, dosage information, and safety or compliance details. Because AI-translated images can contain errors in stylized or highly specific text, sellers should replace Amazon’s version with their own localized creative when accuracy or brand wording is critical.

The update also reduces one of the manual tasks associated with selling across multiple countries, since sellers previously had to recreate image graphics when they wanted text to appear in another language. Sellers should still treat the automated versions as something to review, especially when image text contains information that could affect a shopper’s purchase decision.
